How to Choose the Right Activity Kit for Every Age

A good activity kit is one that comes out of the cupboard again and again. The secret is matching the kit to what your child can do on their own today, with just a little room to grow.

Ages 3–5: short, tactile, together

At this age attention spans are short and fingers are still learning. Pick activities that give a result in 10–15 minutes and that you can do side by side: memory games with thick cards, picture bingo and big, simple painting projects like decorating stones. Avoid kits with tiny pieces.

Ages 6–8: first "real" materials

Children now want tools that look like the ones grown-ups use. A drawing set with real graphite and coloured pencils, a sketchbook of their own and games with simple strategy, such as guessing games, are a great fit. Let them lead and keep instructions short.

Ages 9 and up: projects and skills

Older kids enjoy longer projects and learning technique: shading with different pencil grades, detailed gem art, technical drawing with mechanical pencils. A kit that teaches one skill well beats a box full of everything.
